Forxiga (dapagliflozin) is an SGLT‑2 inhibitor used primarily in Type 2 diabetes mellitus to help lower blood glucose by:

  • Blocking glucose reabsorption in the kidneys,

  • Increasing sugar excretion in urine,

  • Also approved for chronic kidney disease and heart failure management

  • Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction

📌 Indications

  • Type 2 diabetes (as monotherapy or add-on) .

  • Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction

  • Chronic kidney disease (with or without diabetes).

⚙️ Dosage & Administration

  • Typical starting dose: 5 mg once daily in the morning, with or without food

  • May increase to 10 mg daily based on tolerance and kidney function (eGFR ≥ 60 mL/min)

  • In severe liver impairment, doctors may use 5 mg

⚠️ Warnings & Precautions

  • Contraindicated if allergic to dapagliflozin or excipients

  • Not for Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis

  • Risk of Fournier’s gangrene (a rare, serious genital infection)—seek immediate care if symptoms like pain or swelling occur

  • Use with caution in elderly patients, kidney impairment, low blood pressure, or those on diuretics

  • Avoid if pregnant, breastfeeding, or galactose-intolerant
